At Bolt & Nut Centre, we stock Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer products and profiles graded for industrial use. Some of our resin systems carry ASTM E‑84 fire-performance ratings. Here’s what that means, why it matters, and what our clients need to know.
1. What ASTM E-84 Covers
ASTM E‑84 is a Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, also known as the “Steiner Tunnel Test”. It measures two key values:
- Flame Spread Index (FSI) — indicates how fast flames will move across the material’s surface.
- Smoke Development Index (SDI) — indicates how much smoke the material emits when burning.
2. How the Test Works
A sample—typically up to 24 ft long—is placed in a controlled tunnel. A flame is applied, and over 10 minutes the test tracks flame spread and smoke via sensors and visual monitoring.
3. Rating Classes
Materials are classified based on their FSI and SDI:
| Class | Flame Spread index | Smoke Developed Index |
| A(1) | 0-25 | 0-450 |
| B(2) | 26-75 | 0-450 |
| C(3) | 76-200 | 0-450 |
Class A offers the best fire performance.
4. Why It Matters
Many building codes—like the International Building Code and NFPA life safety codes—require interior wall and ceiling finishes to comply with ASTM E‑84 classifications. That ensures materials help slow flame and smoke spread.
5. What We Offer at Bolt & Nut Centre
Our VEFR (Vinyl Ester Fire‑Retardant Resin) FRP structural systems carry an ASTM E‑84 flame spread rating of 15 or less, placing them firmly in Class A—ideal for demanding industrial environments. Our ISOFR (Isophthalic Polyester Fire‑Retardant Resin) comes in at 25 or less, standing just within Class A too.
Why It’s Important
Choosing certified materials like these means:
- Proven fire-safe performance.
- Compliance with regulations.
- Peace of mind that structures won’t contribute to rapid flame or smoke spread.
