Precautions When Using Castle Nuts

Always use a drilled bolt designed for use with castle nuts.
Tighten the nut to the manufacturer’s specified torque before aligning the castellations with the bolt hole. Never loosen the nut simply to line up the slots—continue tightening slightly if alignment is required and the specification allows.
Always fit a new split pin during reassembly. Reusing old pins can reduce their effectiveness and compromise the locking system.
Regular inspections should also include checking that the split pin remains intact and properly bent over.
Castle Nuts vs. Nyloc Nuts
Both castle nuts and nyloc nuts help prevent loosening, but they achieve this in different ways.
A nyloc nut uses a nylon insert to grip the bolt threads, making it suitable for many general applications. Castle nuts, however, use a split pin to create a positive lock, making them the preferred choice for high-vibration, high-load and safety-critical environments.
